The newest member of our team, Carl, has got off to a flying start working on projects across the UK! With 28 years of experience in the Bulk Handling Industry, Carl started his career at Portasilo part of the Portakabin group based in York. Joining the business at 16, he started as a as an apprentice, gained plenty of experience and worked his way up to be an Installation Site Manager. In more recent years, Carl was working as an Installation Engineer within the food sector on large projects overseas that saw him supervising the installation of equipment in factories, all over the world.

Recently, we caught up with Carl about his experiences so far, why he applied to ISF and what he enjoys doing in his free time:

Where were you working before and what did your role entail?

In my previous role, I was working as an Installation Engineer for Baker Perkins, a leading food processing equipment supplier and installer. Over the course of my time there, I was responsible for overseeing the installation of food processing equipment in bakeries all over the world. I was responsible for the installation of products like weigh frames, mixers and forming equipment as whole, biscuit lines extruders and ovens.

Prior to my role at Baker Perkins, I worked for Schenck Process UK which manufactures material handling solutions for coal and biomass-fired power plants and electric utilities and process industries. As Installation Manager, I worked in worldwide locations like Oman, India and Europe running large projects as site/project manager from civil stage to erection of steel work buildings and internal bulk handling equipment. Both roles gave me a wealth of experience and a proven track record of managing the installation of food processing and bulk handling equipment as well as site management including complying with health and safety standards.

What made you apply to ISF?

After having so much international travel as a part of my previous roles that would sometimes see me working away for 3 months, I decided that I wanted to prioritise my work and home life balance.

Although I’ve gone around the world and back, York is my home. When I saw that ISF was hiring for a Project Installation Manager, I felt drawn to the role as I had heard good things about ISF from people I had previously worked with. After working for large corporations for most of my career I was ready for a change of pace and a family run business with good values and an experienced team seemed like a great way to go. Not only that, my experience is a great fit for the business and I feel I am able to bring all the experience I have gained in my career to ISF’s clients in the animal feed sector.

How are you settling in so far?

I have already hit the ground running with overseeing a variety of projects. I’m really enjoying my day-to-day work, and I already feel like a part of the team. They are a great bunch to work with – so far anyway!

What are you most looking forward to?

My main goal is to ensure the successful execution of installations and ensure the utmost safety for the site team.

Outside of work, what are your hobbies?

I’m a big fan of sport, more specifically squash and football. My team is Liverpool, so I really enjoy going to Anfield to watch their games!

Aside from that I enjoy doing DIY at home and spending time with family.
